The Most Common Fraud Tactics Exposed

That moment your beauty sleep is disturbed by the vibration of your phone. You spring up from your bed, grab your phone, punch the ‘receive’ button and the next thing you hear is.. “I’m Mr Kola Chike Amadu calling from your bank, to verify your account, okay?”. Out of annoyance, you end the call. At that moment, you’ve been fraud-zoned and you ended the call because you knew it was a fraudulent tactic. Sadly, there are those who have lost their hard-earned funds to scammers because they fell prey to such. The bottom line is, no one else has to get scammed and that is why we’ll be uncovering some of these tactics to help you stay vigilant.

Fake Profiles: The issue of fake profiles have become increasingly alarming as anybody can disguise his or her identity on social media and extort money from unsuspecting followers. The best way to deal with this is to not disclose your vital information to anyone and only follow organizations or accounts that are authentic. Most of the time, these organizations have a verified tick on social media.

Fake claims: Note that if a claim sounds too good to be true, it probably is. They have only one aim- to persuade you to open your wallet and drain your financial accounts. Keep your distance from get-rich-quick schemes offering you double or more of your money or the ones that tell you to drop a certain amount of money to claim a mouthwatering prize. Don’t do it!

Unsolicited calls: Scammers try to obtain your personal details through unsolicited calls. They are most likely to impersonate someone from an institution, such as a bank or government body. Once they get their hands on your credit card details, BVN, PIN or PASSWORD, they can help themselves to your cash. A legitimate organization will never ask you to share these details.

Pop-up notifications/Malicious links: The number one rule to remember as you surf online is never to be too quick to click on pop-up notifications as they could be baits set by scammers. Likewise, malicious links may come in the form of unexpected emails. Once you open the email and follow through with the instructions in it, which could be for you to download an attachment or click a link, some malicious programs will be snuck into your computer or mobile phone to steal your financial details, personal details, and lots more.
